The President of the company, David O’leary’s intention is to use it as a showpiece and to tell the story of its creation emphasizing Artist SinGh’s talents and O’Leary Paint’s contribution to making history.   “It would be great to showcase the work in a permanent installation where so many people will have the chance to view it!

“We often take guests on tours of our facility in Lansing and we would love to install the work along 160 feet of the walls.”

This piece will be honored with the following quote which Mr. David is planning on placing on the wall near Artist SinGh’s work:

“People are much more creative than you could ever imagine.  They always do unexpected things with the tools that you build.  It’s much more interesting to invent, say, the pencil or paint, and give that to someone else than to just paint it yourself.”  Jess Lee, CEO, Polyvore

Artist SinGh said “it is an honor to for me that I am given the opportunity to be displayed in a large setting like this. I had promised my supported that I will get it done and I did--have the Guinness world record.

Worlds longest painting displayed in Grand Rapids
Jeff Rider, Artist Agent/ manager-- “Artprize Curator Care Fox tried her best to spoil this project. Called it distraction, its no art, competing for world record was a gimmick she said. They took his opportunity to compete in the artPrize for the prize money but his luck worked just fine. There are over 4500 individual paintings in the world’s longest painting and they are selling like hot cakes with the certificate of authenticity and Guinness certificate attached. Now that it is world record, collectors are happy to grab a piece for $100. Almost half the lot is gone. This is as good as winning the Artprize for Artist Singh."

Gurmej Singh’s Painting That Covered Sidewalks, Bridges,

Buildings in Michigan is World’s Longest

WASHINGTON, DC: The Guinness Book of World Records has confirmed that an over two mile-long

painting in Grand Rapids, Michigan, by controversial artist Gurmej Singh is the longest ever created

by a single individual, securing a spot for him in the next edition of the lauded record book.

The painting has been named “The Transcendental,” and was being displayed along the Grand

Rapids River. Singh, who describes himself as a “stunt painter,” says that the painting’s purpose is

“to raise awareness about Liberty for Women, well-being of women, and role of women in our

society.”

Singh, who goes by the street name “SinGh,” initially submitted his work to ArtPrize, the worldrenowned

international art competition two separate times, only to be rejected both times. His

submission to the 2013 competition was rejected just before the September 18 opening of the

ArtPrize exhibition because it violated rules for being too big —it did not fit into the 35-foot space

allotted to Singh by the competition —and because Singh had changed the focus of the piece

without notifying ArtPrize officials.

- Artist SinGh and the longest painting. Miles of art! -

38 days in the making, India's Gurmej Singh, aka Artist SinGh, took the record title for the longest painting by an individual, with this fruity colourful creation measuring 3,444.91 metres (11,302 ft 2.11 in).

The painting was displayed publicly stretching across the parks, bridges and public walkways of Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA in September this year.

A Michigan-based artist Gurmej Singh’s work titled “Transcendental,”  an 11,300-foot long painting he attempted to display in a local art competition, has set a Guinness World Record for creating the “World's Longest Painting” by an individual.

Gurmej Singh, who uses Artist SinGh as his professional identity and bills himself as "the world's best parallel processing stunt painter," has had several run-ins with the local art community for his work, which includes gimmicks such as painting while reclining on a motorcycle, or being buried alive for three days.

SinGh told mlive.com that he had to meet stringent Guinness standards to succeed. According to mlive.com, the final version of SinGh's entry for ArtPrize 2013, the local competition, was disqualified for a rules violation and ordered removed prior to the Sept. 18 opening of the fifth annual exhibition and $560,000 competition.

In 2009, he built what he described as "the world's tallest easel" at The B.O.B. in Grand Rapids, Mich., and painted on top of a 75-foot-tall scaffold in front of it for several days. Two years later, he painted "The Power of Women," a 35-foot long, 10-foot high, life-size painting of women on horseback, also on display at The B.O.B.

Last year, however, SinGh's installation of an effigy of Saddam Hussein, hanging by a noose in a cage in The B.O.B. parking lot, was removed by owner Greg Gilmore just hours before the opening of the ArtPrize 2012, mlive.com reported.

In September, ArtPrize officials said SinGh's project, titled "The Transcendental," changed dramatically from the original approved proposal to be installed in Sixth Street Park north of downtown Grand Rapids along the east bank of the Grand River. Singh was to create an acrylic drip-painting 10 to 12 feet high by 30 to 40 feet long. After visiting the site, SinGh decided to change his project to the world's longest painting, spending 38 days painting more than 2 miles of paper. "When I embarked (on) this life-changing journey, I knew it wouldn't be easy,” he said.

We Sincerly thank MR. GURMEJ SINGH,for the time he gave for the questions Mr GURMEJ SINGH answered bellow...

LONGEST PAINTING

Q1.What inspired you to make the longest painting in the world?

ANS. I have tried this attempt before in 1999 and failed miserably because of some miscreants who damaged my painting in full. I hate to leave things undone like that. Attempt like this requires good health and readiness. So felt the need to do it right now and could not wait no longer. I was totally inspired and wanted to test myself again.
Q2 How did"THE TRANSCENDENTAL" made a difference in your life?

ANS:-To transcend is to go to a higher level, to go above and beyond the ordinary. Transcendental knowledge is much higher than the knowledge of our mundane existence. I have named my painting “the transcendental” because this work is transcending me to another level of discipline— making the world’s longest painting in 38 days and working for 20 hours a day to do something that has never been done before. It was challenging at all levels-mental, physical and spiritual. Of course I am going to make some money of this project but it is not always about money. It is more about putting my self to test and pushing my own limits to the unknown is what makes difference in my life
Q3. Which hurdles did you face to execute "THE TRANSCENDENTAL"?

ANS:-The transcendental is an artistic pleasure hard to express in words. The creative forces overpowered my head; my plans changed why not do something beyond the ordinary—even bigger than needed. When I embarked this life-changing journey, I knew it won't be easy.

My goal was to complete the painting before the beginning of the ArtPrize on 18th September. I had 45 days to complete the painting. I did it in 38 days.I had to keep going with full force, work 20 hours day, suffered blisters on my hands and worked in all whether conditions. I did not worry about the paint but focused on the mission lying a head, I had to meet stringent Guinness standards to succeed, one of which was that the painting had to be displayed publically for the Guinness officials to see and measure.

A project of this nature needed support and encouragement of the authorities. In my case it was the non from the ArtPrize. I tried my best to get cooperation of the local authorities for this project. However, it was not easy. The Grand Rapids police refused to cooperate when they realized that ArtPrize did not want me to display the world's longest painting. Kevin Bust (Exhibition Director) threatened to ban me from the ArtPrize and the curator Clare Fox stopped me with all her power. They kept discouraging me and convincing me to change my plans but what had already started could not be stopped now and that is simply me.

The painting kept growing longer with each passing day. The length of the painting had not just broken the world record but surpassed it by many meters. The authorities refused to cooperate and nothing was working in my favor. I decided to display the painting without permission. I was ready to pay all the punitive damages if there were any. I decided to abandon the park all together and displayed this giant monster all over the city.

The painting went over the bridges, over the loading locks, by the river fishing area, underpasses, over the steps, under the steps, under the bridges, public walk ways, through the museum, via the art school, through the luxury hotels, private properties and more. This monster was so long that it caught everyone’s attention and won admiration.

Q4.How did you manage with the controversies?

ANS:-I don’t plan these controversies. They just come knock my door. I open my door to say hi and bye and continue with my business.

Q5. What do you like beside painting?

ANS.I like to read good books, research papers and watch meaningful movies. I like active lifestyle, I love sports-- lately I have been doing lot of water skiing, tennis, soccer. If I have time I work on my acting. One day I would like to make a movie.

Q6. How do you feel now after making this extraordinary record?

ANS.The battle had been won. The world’s longest painting had been created, Guinness World Record was achieved and, the city of Grand Rapids had just witnessed history!I feel good…I think I did something worthwhile in these 38 days
.
Q7. What would you like to say to our youngsters?

ANS.Trust your self is the first step to success. Follow your dreams and do what you are best at. When road a head becomes difficult don’t give up, get up there is a way out. Be strong to face adversities and failure both leads a path to success. Celebrate little successes, its positive reinforcement and a check point to prepare you for your next step.

Why did the world's longest painting become controversial?

Having moved ahead from the ArtPrize fiasco last year, this year I was determined to compete in the ArtPrize. There was no 'controversy', no 'nudity' no 'attention seeking'. My painting would portray just pears.

However, as creative forces overpowered my head, my plan changed to making the longest painting of the world and break the existing Guinness record for the same. Why not do something beyond the ordinary? I decided to name my painting 'The Transcendental'. Making the world's longest painting in a few days would transcend me beyond my mundane existence. It would be an artistic pleasure hard to express in words.

When I embarked this life-changing journey, I knew it won't be easy. My goal was to complete the painting before the beginning of the ArtPrize on 18th September.
I had to meet stringent Guinness standards to succeed, one of which was that the painting had to be displayed publically for the Guinness officials to see and measure.

A project of this nature, needed support and encouragement of friends and cooperation of the authorities. I got in touch with the ArtPrize curator Clare Fox to let them know of my ambitious plans. I was given a go ahead for this on the fly.

I started painting for hours everyday to create a xx metres painting before the ArtPrize began. However, at one point, I was told by the curator that I couldn't do it. They changed statements often which distracted me but I refused to be bogged down.

When I asked them why they could not make up their mind about displaying my painting for the ArtPrize, they told me that projecting it as the world's longest painting was just a marketing gimmick.  I replied, 'then ArtPrize is a marketing gimmick too'.

Finally ArtPrize gave me (35 feet X 1 foot) of the space to display the world's longest painting and a large sculpture of a pear I agreed to this to be in the contest even though I knew it wasn't enough.

I went ahead spending days painting, which was growing each passing day to surpass the existing Guinness world record for the longest painting. There was no looking back for me now.
I tried my best to get cooperation of the local authorities for this project. However, it was not easy. The Grand Rapids police wanted money to be part of it. I was willing to pay money for my project. However, the police refused to cooperate when they realized that ArtPrize did not want me to display the world's longest painting.

Kevin Bust (Exhibition Director) threatened  to ban me from the ArtPrize and the curator Clare Fox stopped me with all her power.

They kept discouraging me and convincing me to change my plans but what had already started could not be stopped now. The painting kept growing longer with each passing day. The length of the painting had not just broken the world record but surpassed it by many meters.
The authorities refused to cooperate and nothing was working in my favor.

However the world's longest painting was now ready. After exhausting every possible option of reconciliation with the authorities, I decided to display the painting without permission.

The authority of the curator Clare Fox  was only over the park and nowhere else. This monster was so long that it caught everyones attention and won admiration.
Now was my time to face the authorities. I knew they had an idea that this was coming because I had been in touch with them even before beginning the project. However, they had chosen not to reply to me for the permissions that I had sought.
Right before the Guinness official was in the city to measure the worlds longest painting, I got  a call from the Grand Rapids Police Department.  I was asked to appear before the panel who seemed like gangsters waiting to avenge and confront me. The panel included ArtPrize Kevin Burst and his body guards, park authority representatives, and Grand Rapids Police Lieutenant Dean.
I told them that if they had wanted we could have done this together but they chose to stand against me for this. However by then the painting had been displayed all over the city and the situation was complex. I was given time to remove the work during the night. Lieutenant Dean was on round all night screaming at my team while they were removing the painting.

However, the battle had been won. The world’s longest painting had been created, Guinness World Record was Achieved and, the city of Grand Rapids had just witnessed history!
